Day 1: Anchorage — Talkeetna (D)
Get picked up from your hotel in Anchorage and head north to the historic village of Talkeetna, nestled at the base of North America’s tallest peak, Mount McKinley. With its panoramic views of the Alaska Range and the stars stretched above it, the borough acts as the perfect vantage point for catching a glimpse of the northern lights’ brilliant display.

You'll have your choice of rooms for an authentically Alaskan experience. Cozy up in a room equipped with one double bed, or select a room that features both double-size and twin-size beds for more space. Restrooms are located just down the hall in true Roadhouse fashion, but if you prefer more private accommodations or need to avoid stairs, upgrade to Trapper John's Cabin. The rugged cabin, which features trapping memorabilia and cozy flannel sheets, also includes a full kitchen, electricity, a TV with VHS/DVD and the much photographed "5-Star Outhouse" — although you won't need to use it, since the cabin now comes equipped with an indoor bathroom.

After checking in, enjoy a filling dinner spread of soups, breads and desserts. Following your meal, your guide explains the wonders of the Aurora Borealis and the Alaskan night sky, divulging facts about the natural wonder such as why the stars here might look brighter than they do in your hometown. Following your celestial primer, slip into a pair of snowshoes and experience the phenomenon firsthand. Track into the winter air for a chance at an up-close look at the northern lights and the clear sky hanging above the spectacular light display.

Day 2: Talkeetna — Anchorage (B)
The next morning, linger over a leisurely breakfast of homemade fare before embarking on your next adventure: dog sledding through Matanuska Valley’s snowy meadows. Meet your 12 new canine companions, all trained at a 2012 Iditarod Champion Kennel, before they pull you on sled runners over the same training trails favored by Dallas Seavey, the youngest musher to win the Iditarod. After your thrilling day on the snow, you’ll be transported back to your Anchorage hotel.
