After pickup from your Boston hotel, sit back and relax on the 1.5-hour drive south to Newport, Rhode Island. When you arrive, you'll see why this fabulous New England resort city is nicknamed the 'Sailing Capital of the World.'
Learn about the city's colonial heritage on your scenic drive along Ocean Drive (10-Mile Drive), affording views of historic mansions, beaches and secluded coves. This epic stretch of road is lined with jaw-dropping million-dollar mansions that were once the 19th-century houses of the New York elite, who fled the big city during the summer to Rhode Island. These mega-mansions played a role in transforming Newport’s coast from a quiet summer colony of quaint cottages to a legendary resort town brimming with opulent estates.
Your first stop is The Breakers, the former home of the Vanderbilt family and a US National Historic Landmark. As you'll learn on your walking tour, this is the grandest of Newport's summer 'cottages,' and was a symbol of the family's social and financial reputation at turn of the century.
Next, enjoy free time to stroll along Newport's beautifully restored waterfront. Spend time shopping and dining on your own, and enjoy views of the harbor dotted with glamorous private yachts, modern racing sailboats and Newport's fishing fleet and ships from around the world.
In the afternoon, you'll visit a second mansion, Marble House, another home of the Vanderbilt family and a US National Historic Landmark. Take a guided walking tour to fully appreciate the grandiose of this majestic piece of property; the interior of this Gilded Age mansion is a sight to be seen.
After your tour, enjoy more views of Newport's mansions and beaches from afar on your return journey along Ocean Drive back to Boston.

James Allen was our guide, and we were entertained and enlightened by his constant attention to all the details of the Newport tour. We learned so much. Everyone had such a good time due to the attention Mr. Allen paid to each of us and his ability to include everyone in his presentation. I would certainly recommend this tour to anyone coming to a Boston.

There was ample time to tour a third mansion. I would suggest adding one more mansion to the tour. Out tour left from Boston, slightly late and we had more than enough time for lunch and shopping. I would have enjoyed seeing a third mansion since we drove so far to get there.

1 hour for each of the mansion is simply insufficient, i would recommend at least 2.5. The 2 hours lunchbreak is far too long as there was nothing much to see.

We were in Boston for 7 days and had 7 different trips. This was the best one by far! The homes are worth the 90 minute drive. Our bus driver took us to see homes we would have never seen on our own

Only got to go inside 2 mansions but they were great. Spent about 70 minutes at each and could have spent have day at both they were so good!

Out of our whole time in Boston, this was our favorite tour! It is about an 1.5 hour drive each way, but it is worth it. The mansions are amazing- so elaborate and arguably fancier than Buckingham Palace on the inside. The Marble House was the better of the two, but the Breakers was enjoyable as well. You also get a decent amount of time to walk around the town and grab a bite to eat. It's a very cute town and definitely worth the visit. Highly recommend!

Excellent tour of Newport and the mansions! Unfortunately, it rained 2 inches the day we went! Our bus was old and the air conditioning had to be on the whole time so the driver could see out the window. We were freezing, but the driver got us all back safe!
