Make your way to Seppeltsfield Winery for a guided tour and tasting. As you approach the winery, take in the sight of vineyards that span more than 250 acres (100 hectares). Established in 1851, Seppeltsfield is one of Australia's most iconic wine estates. Varieties cultivated here include Barossa Valley’s traditional shiraz and grenache grapes, along with smaller plantings of traditional European fortified varieties for vintage port and sherry. Note the low yellow buildings built into the hillside on a series of terraces. The building is the 1888 Gravity Flow Winery, a historic landmark that was the largest and most modern winery of its kind in the late 1900s. During your tour, your host explains how wine was once made in the building, and how recent renovations have improved the facility. Choose from two options that feature tastings of Seppeltsfield’s excellent wines: Taste Your Birth Year (30 minutes): Meet your knowledgeable host and head to the Centennial Cellar. Your host shares the history of the winery and the winemaking process as you sample a tawny port from your birth year. Enjoy asking questions and sipping on the fine vintage during an unforgettable tasting in the cellar. Centennial Cellar (60 minutes): The Centenary Tour makes available to the public 100-year-old ports that were previously reserved for special occasions. During this once-in-a-lifetime tour, see the Seppelt family homestead then enjoy a private tasting of fortified wines in the estate's Trophy Cellar. Your knowledgeable guide shows you every barrel that has been put away since 1878, explaining the history of the winery and its winemaking methods along the way. In the Centennial Cellar, your host pours you a tawny port directly from the barrel. Then sip the legendary 100-year-old Para Vintage Tawny, considered an Australian national treasure.
Fantastic to learn a little about the Seppeltsfield winery and how it came about along with how/why the storage of past tawny vintages was created. Just wish you got to try more than a small glass of your birth year as it goes so quickly!
