Wellington Falls Experience:
Depart from Hobart’s waterfront district in the morning to begin your 4.5-hour tour. Drive 15 minutes to arrive at Fern Tree, a small township located 1,300 feet (400 meters) above sea level. After getting comfortable on your mountain bike, follow your guide along the Pipeline Track — a local favorite for biking, walking and running.
The trail to the Wellington Falls winds through subalpine rainforest on a shaded path that alternates between wide pathways, a single-track trail on steep embankments, gravel roads, and fords over small streams. Expect about six miles (10 kilometers) of gentle riding at a 2% grade, with an overall climb of 770 feet (235 meters). Both the ride and walk are considered easy to moderate, and are suitable for physically fit people of all riding abilities.
At the highest point of your ride, leave the bikes behind for a
40-minute walk through the forest, climbing about 325 feet (100 meters)
to reach a viewing platform where you can get great photos of Wellington
Falls. If you feel adventurous, follow your guide some 165 feet (50 meters) to the top of the falls!
Keep an eye out for native wildlife, including wallabies and parrots, and get great views of Derwent River, Kingston and Cathedral Rock during your ride. Afterward, return to your bikes and ride downhill back to the van. You are returned to Hobart to end your tour.
Wellington to Waterfront:
Depart from Hobart’s waterfront district in the morning to start your 3-hour tour. Drive 13 miles (21 kilometers) up Mt Wellington to arrive at your starting point at the peak of the mountain, at 4,165 feet (1,270 meters). The route down offers a mix of tarmac, rock and dirt trails. Have time to look out from the viewing platforms, getting spectacular views of Hobart, the Derwent Valley, and more.
When ready, jump on your bike and head downhill after your guide, on an exhilarating 1,739-foot (530-meter) descent along tarmac to a picnic area called The Springs. From The Springs, leave the pavement for the renowned North South Track, which takes twists and turns through lush rainforest. Experienced riders can add on challenging side runs for more fun. The trail requires a lot of pedaling, tight turns, and places where you must duck under logs. After 3.75 miles (6 kilometers) of riding, you arrive at Junction Cabin where you take a break.
Hop back on your bike for a fast ride along the main fire trail and Old Farm Road to the back of Cascade Brewery, Australia’s oldest brewery. A gentle ride through parklands along the Hobart Rivulet Walk then passes the Cascades Female Factory, where thousands of female convicts and children were imprisoned between 1828 and 1856. Continue to ride into Hobart where you finish on the Hobart Waterfront.
Bangor Tasman Discovery:
Set out in the morning on a scenic 1-hour drive that rounds Frederick Henry Bay to reach Dunalley. Stop to purchase lunch supplies then continue to Bangor, a private property with more than 30,000 acres (6,000 hectares) of farmland and native bush. Home to abundant native wildlife — wallabies, wombats, black swans, and sea eagles — Bangor offers a wealth of gorgeous terrain to discover. Your guide introduces you to the owner of the property, whose family has been here since the mid-1800s. After being welcomed to this special place, continue further into the property until you reach the starting point for your ride.
Start with a gentle ride to Lagoon Bay, which once housed two whaling sites and now has a popular private campground. Then pedal along a gradual climb of 460 feet (140 meters), with some steep sections, pedaling nearly two miles (3 kilometers) to reach the top of Cape Frederick Hendrick, an imposing bluff that overlooks the east coast of Tasmania. Massive sea cliffs lie in one direction, and in the other direction Maria Island, Two Mile Beach, and Marion Bay beckon.
Follow your guide on a thrilling descent that takes you to Two Mile Beach, an isolated white-sand beach backed by massive sand dunes. Nearby, take in beautiful Black Swan Lagoon and its abundant birdlife. Then continue over the next headland to a rocky shore with rugged inlets and crashing waves. Finally, arrive at Tasman Monument, which marks where Abel Tasman’s ship landed in 1642, bringing the first non-aboriginal people to these shores. Return over the hills to your van, taking in sweeping views of where you have been riding. Snacks are provided and a lunch stop is taken in the middle of the day.
