Military Tour (4 hours):
After morning pickup at your Townsville hotel, travel by air-conditioned minivan to the Jezzine Barracks, located on the western side of The Strand.
Your guide briefs you on Townsville's military history then takes you on a guided tour of Kissing Point Fort. Established in 1891 by the British forces, the fort is located in a 38-acre (15-hectare) military site that was still in use until 2006. Recently reopened as a public park, the site includes observation points, picnic areas, an amphitheater, botanical gardens and the Army Museum of North Queensland.
Once you have seen the fort, head to either the Royal Australian Air Force Museum (Tuesdays and Thursdays) or the Army Museum (Wednesdays and Fridays) where, after an introduction, you have about 45 minutes to browse the museum at your own pace.
Next up, continue to the Palmetum, a botanical garden that features about 300 palm species. Follow your guide to see the Black Hawk Memorial that remembers the soldiers who were killed in a 1996 helicopter accident in Queensland.
Afterward, refresh with a morning tea (lunch if Military and Scenic option is chosen) at the Tumbetin Tea Rooms, located in a historic lodge near the botanical garden, before taking a ride over to Lavarack Barracks, home to Australia's largest defense base and the army's 3rd Brigade.
On the last leg of this tour, you can get wrapped up in WWII history on French Street, where the Royal Australian Air Force intercepted Japanese communications and was part of the important intelligence network of 1942.
Military and Scenic Tour (7 hours):
After a morning of Townsville military history, go on a 2.5-hour city sightseeing tour for a combination tour that covers all of Townsville’s scenic and historic highlights in one day. During the sightseeing tour, discover the city’s history and see many of the Townsville’s most iconic sights including Castle Hill a spectacular monolith of pick granite located in the heart of the city with breath taking views across one of the countries most beautiful landscapes. Immerse yourself during a short walk along the award winning public development known as The Strand. View the city centre, entertainment precinct on Palmer street and be informed about the port of Townsville the states 3rd largest port and so much more. Drive by attractions such as Reef HQ, an enormous aquarium with Great Barrier Reef corals and marine animals, and the Museum of Tropical Queensland, which features artifacts from the sunken British warship HMS Pandora.

This is a must for anyone who wants to know about Townsville and its military history. May sound dry but it was truly amazing how steeped in military history the city is. Toby our guide was ex Army and a local and his knowledge and enthusiasm made the whole tour feel very personalised. The stories he tells make the history come alive. The Army museum is included on the tour and it is a truly comprehensive and fascinating place. I really had no idea how much the military, RAAF and Army have played and still play in the life of Townsville. We did the afternoon city tour as well so had lunch as part of the tour at a beautiful old restaurant near the botanical gardens. We even fitted in a walk around the gardens after lunch. The whole tour was informative, well organised and the passion Toby demonstrated made it special. Even if you aren't a military buff this tour is still very well worth the time.
