Start your rainforest adventure at Okaihau, and join your knowledgeable local guide on a walk through the Puketi forest. Gain fascinating insights into New Zealand's subtropical flora and fauna as you walk among towering kauri trees, the world’s second largest tree, found only in the country’s North Island.
On the half-day and full-day walks, keep an eye out for the rainforest's rare endemic birds and subtropical plant species, as your walk takes you beside rivers and waterfalls in full flow. Hear Maori legends and stories from European colonial history, and enjoy views of valleys filled with ancient trees, including two of the largest kauri in New Zealand.
See conservation at work, and find out how the forest evolved from young, to mature and established trees. Learn some of the trees' natives names and understand the ecology and mystery behind the kauri tree.
On the exciting two- to three-hour night-time walk, watch as the forest comes alive as daylight turns to evening. Listen as bird calls change from day to night, see bats flying overhead and feeding on insects, and keep a lookout for the rare nocturnal kiwi bird, New Zealand's national symbol.
Stop for refreshments on the three-hour morning and afternoon guided walks, and also enjoy lunch if you select the five-hour full-day tour.

Really enjoyed this guided and highly informative rainforest walk.
Our guide Ian is a passionate environmentalist and that is clear from his enthusiasm on
discussing all aspects of the rainforest and its inhabitants.
We did this walk in pouring rain but it probably enhanced the whole rainforest experience...ponchos provided!

Our guide was clearly very knowledgeable and for better or worse, there was more things pointed out that could have been seen if we were on the night walk - we took the half day morning walk. We would recommend that this only be undertaken by strong hikers with proper foot gear. Some in our group had to turn back in part because of their poor choice in shoes.

Just got back form 2 weeks exploring the North Island of New Zealand, including a couple days in the Bay of Islands. If you are up that way, thoroughly recommend taking the time to take a guided walk through the Puketi Rain Forest.

Barabra the tour operator looked after me with quick follow up on any questions I had before the tour, including arranging pick up and drop off form my Pahai hotel for me. She made a fabulous lunch including to die for home made chocolate mud muffins. She is called the muffin queen for a very good reason.

Helen my guide was awesome, very knowledgeable, enthusiastic, and passionate about the forest, the wildlife and flora. I did the 6 hour hike and thoroughly enjoyed myself, with one of the highlights having our lunch at the base of a 1000 year old Kauri tree magical. The little touches on the tour made it very special, home made muffins, a fantastic lunch, Helen provided me with a print out of the area and where we walked with information on the forest and region, and Helens took the time to point out all the things that made the forest special. The time flew by. This is a must do in the Bay of Islands.

Wonderful tour! So unlike the big bus tours that the cruise line offers. Very knowledgeable guide. Ride out to tour went through beautiful scenery. We opted to include a trip to the glow worm cave which was well worth the additional price.

We felt this tour was grossly over priced. ~$75 pp for a walk in a forest, compared to every other tour we did in NZ, is very high. The picture in Viator makes you think there is some kind of a high platform between the trees, there is none. It is simply a guided walk in a forest, nothing less and nothing more. $75 is too much.
