Your adventure starts with hotel pickup in Queenstown for the drive outside of town to a pristine mountain meadow. After an orientation about how to use the provided equipment, strap on your snowshoes and hit the snow. (Be sure to bring sunglasses to protect your eyes from the bright reflection on the snow.)

Watch your guide demonstrate a few simple techniques, and then set out on your walk after a little practice — it usually takes only a few minutes to get the hang of it. Follow your guide through the mountains, hiking at a leisurely pace along gently sloping terrain. Snowshoes allow you to walk across deep snow without sinking in, giving you the ability to explore with ease.

Throughout your walk, listen to informative commentary from your guide about the area’s vegetation, animal life, history, geology and climate. When you reach a scenic viewpoint in a basin near the top of the mountains, sit on a freshly carved snow-seat and enjoy a hot cup of coffee and cookies provided by your guide. While you rest your legs, take in stunning views of the mountain scenery all around you.

Total walking distance is about 1.5 to 2.5 miles (3 to 4 km) over two to three hours, with plenty of stops to rest and take photos. At the end of your walk, your guide returns you to your hotel.
