Start the tour in Piazza Vittorio Veneto, the beautiful central square built in 1880 and see the panoramic point of the Tre Archi Mater Domini: Civita and Sassi, a panorama that leaves you breathless. See the Chiesa Ipogea del Santo Spirito (Mater Domini), one of the seven existing Benedictine settlements in cities and in the countryside of Matera. The tour then continues along
Via del corso, the main road of the city center.
Following are the Church of St. Francis of Assisi, the second for beauty and importance after the cathedral church of the first impact Baroque-Leccese, built on an ancient underground crypt, and Chiesa del Purgatorio, built in 1747 in late Baroque style. See Piazzetta Pascoli, which offers a breathtaking view of the famous Sassi of Matera, a see a cave house, the typical house of ancestors, still furnished in period style. You can also see a cellar from the XV century and the Rock Church of the VIII/IX century: a natural cave entirely dug into the limestone rock. The rock church, despite its simplicity, was decorated with frescoes, which, in addition to the decorative function, "helped" in the search for and contemplation of faith.
The tour continues through the alleys and streets of Sassi, natural setting of several films as "The Gospel According to St. Matthew" by Pier Paolo Pasolini and "The Passion" by Mel Gibson. The Barbaric-Lombard Cemetery is an ancient necropolis located in the heart of Sasso Caveoso and visit the Illustrative shops at a local craftshop, the shop in the heart of the Sassi of Matera, where you can watch the master craftsmen who produce their work and have a small museum of rural life. At the end of the tour there will be a tasting of local products.
