From Milan (Central train station) take the train to Varenna (approx. 1-hour), a charming little village on the Lake Como right in front of Bellagio, another renowned 'treasure' of the lake. Then you will drive all the way up to Valtellina, which is a valley located in the Lombardy region (northern Italy) that begins right at the top of lake Como, as much as possible off the main roads, so that you can go through some tiny and pristine villages clinging to the mountains.
