We really enjoyed the tour of Palermo there is a lot to see and this tour covered most of it

Loved Palermo, but unfortunately the day we went we were blighted by torrential rain. We optimistically boarded the first Hop on Hop off bus of the day near the port we were on a cruise and decided to go UP TOP. The rain started, it was windy, but we thought we'd brave it out with umbrellas as we didn't want to see the city through steamed up windows. BIG MISTAKE - we were absolutely drenched and in the end had to leave the bus before it has finished its red route. We never got onto the blue route and were told later by some fellow cruisers on our bus that it stopped and cancelled any further trips because the conditions were so bad. Not your fault I know. My husband developed hypothermia and we had to get him back to the ship quickly. One memory of Palermo that will stay with me forever was a half eaten dead cat on the pavement in the dock area - that no one had seen fit to remove! Still, it is a beautiful city - a bit like Naples only more so - but do choose a sunny day!
Incidentally, the city provides a free city bus which follows a similar route to the Hop on Hop off - no commentary though and no up top - I don't know if it provides anything for the blue route.

The biggest problem was locating the bus stops. Despite having a map showing given points of pick /drop off, they weren't always signposted with the bus tour making it very difficult to know if you were in the right place. Locals were helpful but often didn't know themselves or sent us to the wrong bus stop. Wasted a lot of time on a one day trip in Palermo waiting at bus stops and often the wrong ones. Clearer signposting like a simple solution of company sign at designated bus stops would be useful? We did the A line route but never found the B line. Even the bus company staff were vague and we went the wrong way. Expensive really at 20 each. Horse and carriage only costs 50 bartered down and they let you get off and explore sights too and can carry four people.

This is a good way to get around the busy city, but the commentary is minimal. There is such opportunity to provide visitors with information on the sights and history surrounding us, but that just didn't happen. You still need your own guide book to figure out what you're looking at and the historical relevance. We walked up to the catacombs from stop 6 I think and that was interesting. I usually love seeing new cities this way, but this tour was definitely lacking.

It's a great way to get a view of the overview/layout of Palermo. Definitely recommend.

Definitely start your day on Line A. We found it helpful to sit on the bus for an entire loop, listening to the headset. That helped us decide where we wanted to get off the next time around. Be certain to ask where the pickup location is the first time you get on the bus and pay attention to all of the stops on the way. This was a great way to get an overview of the city and see a lot of the attractions.

Did not take the bus. Hired a taxi and had great ride around Palermo on a Sunday with many stores closed. He took us to a beach and we had a coffee . Great time
