Explore the stunning markets of Ancient Rome on a half-day walking tour of the Trajan’s Market complex and Museum of the Imperial Forum.
Start on the Via dei Fori Imperiali (Imperial Forum), where an archaeologist guide will give you an insight on how and why this part of Ancient Rome changed over the years. As the needs of the existing Roman Forum were tested by the growing population, Julius Caesar began to build an annex to the existing Forum in 54 BC.
Enter Trajan’s Market to see a breathtaking complex built by the architect Apollodorus of Damascus. Consisting of shopping streets that sold fruit and vegetables, grain, spices, fish oil, and wine, the market complex also housed the state storehouses that provided food for the poor at moderate prices, and sometimes for free.
The 6 terraced floors contained over 150 shops along the Via Biberatica. From here, a steep stairway led to a huge market hall containing more ancient shops thought to have formed the focal point of the complex.
End at the Museum of the Imperial Forum to see relics found during the excavation, such as a Corinthian capital decorated on 3 sides, a piece from the lower block of an Ionic cornice, and a piece of the colossal statue of Genius Augusti.
