Hike up Mount Vesuvius and then explore the UNESCO-listed ruins of Pompeii on a must-do day trip from Rome! Going at a steady pace, the hike includes a walk on the ridge of Italy’s famously feisty volcano, allowing incredible views down into the crater itself. After a pizza lunch, head to Pompeii to see the havoc that Mount Vesuvius reaped on it in AD 79. Tour the UNESCO-listed excavations, seeing fossils and well-preserved ruins while hearing the horrors that befell this intriguing ancient city. Mt Vesuvius is inaccessible from November 20 to March 31. During this time, the hike is replaced with a visit to the iconic City of Naples. We’ll take a panoramic bus tour and have some free time to walk around the city centre.

The eruption in AD 79 spelled a fiery end for Pompeii, but the catastrophe also almost perfectly preserved the port city under layers of Volcanic ash. Thousands of years later, you can still explore the eerie streets and step inside homes, bathhouses and fast food places, as the licensed guide paints a vivid picture of life in the city’s final days.
You’ll travel from Rome to Pompeii in an air-conditioned private coach, accompanied and entertained all the way by your expert tour co-ordinator. Skip the line at Pompeii as one of the site’s own officially licensed guides will show you around the city, painting a vivid picture of life in final days before the eruption. Throughout the ruins, you’ll come across harrowing death casts: plaster recreations of unfortunate citizens preserved by the superheated volcanic ash.
In addition to the guided portion of your tour, you’ll have time for wandering and picture-taking in Pompeii followed by an authentic Neapolitan pizza lunch.

It’s a short coach ride from Pompeii to the foot of the volcano that still looms above it. A half-mile hike from the parking lot takes you right to the sometimes still-steaming crater of Mt. Vesuvius still perhaps the most dangerous volcano in the world. Stand at the epicentre of that ancient disaster and feel awe at the utter devastation it must have caused, to blast an entire city off the map for millennia. Then turn and enjoy the contrast: the crater offers the most stunning view of the sun-drenched Bay of Naples.
In the winter months, when Vesuvius is closed for hiking, the tour travels from Pompeii to Naples, with panoramic views of the volcano and historical commentary from your tour co-ordinator along the way. You’ll have ample free time to explore Naples a city as vibrant and alive as Pompeii is quiet and affecting before the comfortable coach returns you to Rome.

Temperatures on the volcano are usually lower than temperatures on the ground; a sweater or light jacket is recommended.

On rare occasions the crater of Mount Vesuvius may close due to adverse weather conditions or stikes. If this happens, you will be offered an extended tour of Pompeii, a visit to the National Archeological Museum of Pompeii, or a visit to Mount Solfatara, a volcano located in the Phlaegrean Fields near Mount Vesuvius.

Appropriate dress is required for entry into some sites on this tour.

From late November to March the Vesuvius isn't accessible and it is replaced with a visit to the city of Naples with panoramic bus tour and free time.

The hike up to the crater of Vesuvius requires a good level of general fitness. The walk is uphill at a 14 degree angle and takes roughly 20 minutes.

Please advise any specific dietary requirements at time of booking.

Fantastic trip! Excellent facilities, though being up top of the mountain was a bit rushed. Sean was a great guide, very funny and took great care of us. Our Pompeii guide was awesome too, best bit of the trip seeing the ruins and how they would have lived back then!

Our journey starts in central Rome, where we, from the beginning, get some info and knowledge for what surrounds. Our Guide (Robert) was amazing! Energetic and full of knowledge, history and stories behind everything we saw. We visited the Vesuvius Crater (amazing by the way, and not that challenging as it sounds) and Pompeii all at once. To the city, we took the 2h tour and exploring the Vesuvius was about 1h. Everything was amazing, but unfortunately, a light rain came and go during all the tour.

Robert was great and went out of his way to keep us informed, checked on us and kept us abreast of what we were going to do.
Giuseppe as the driver was also good.
George (??) our guide in Pompeii was knowledgeable and tried to sketch the scene as if it was today.
He had all the details to impart to us.
Pompeii cannot be accomplished in a 2.5 hour stop but we were given a good and humorous review.
I would return to Pompeii as ones simply needs more time.
Vesuvius was good to see but I have done it now, so can tick the box and move on.
The visit was well done.
The food at the lunch break was good and enough to recharge you for the climb to the volcano.
On the way back, Robert gave us good tips on what to do, what to avoid and how to handle the tourist traps.

Cristiano, Jonathan and Fausto were amazing. Was our first trip to Italy, decided to take a gamble on city tours which proved to be a great experience. Everything went smoothly on this trip, which was short and concise, yet extremely informative. Cristiano and Jonathan helped us understans Pompeii better ( including the Pompeii guide who took us around Pompeii) and after, gave us individual advice about Rome and travelling Italy etc. Great guides make for a great trip.

Of all the tours we’ve been, this was the best of them all. You definitely got your monies worth. It was remarkable to see the ruins lying beneath Mount Vesuvius. Our tour guide, Angie, was a delight. She was witty, knowledgeable and enjoyable to have as a tour guide. We were joined by another group headed by a guide named Enrica. She was also a pleasure. This trip is a must! Pompeii is amazing and since it was March, we got to explore Naples! The entire trip was great. Our overall tour guide was Anna and she did a great job. Our guide in Pompeii was George and he was amazing - so knowledgeable and entertaining with lots of extra tidbits of info. A great experience and well worth the time and money.
