Deep-Sea Fishing Excursion (full day)
After morning hotel pickup in Bilbao, take a 20-minute drive north to the lovely seaside town of Getxo. At the port, meet your skipper and board your boat seating a max of 10 passengers. Receive a safety briefing and orientation on light-tackle fishing. All necessary equipment, including fishing rods and bait, is available on board. Novices and experienced anglers are both welcome!

Head out into the deep Atlantic waters of the Bay of Biscay where many shipwrecks from old maritime wars lie below and are now home to bonito, sea bass, tuna, mackerel, dentex and grouper. Depending on the weather, the water may be calm or blustery winds may whip up waves, but your experienced skipper will take you to the best spots possible for successful fishing.

As you move to different locations, listen to entertaining stories of the sea and ask any questions you may have. You’ll try fishing both with the boat stopped and in motion. The tide, luck and your skills all factor into how often you’ll feel something tug at your line. This angling tour in open waters is great for both experienced fishers intent on reeling in as much as they can, and those who simply wish to relax and enjoy the beautiful sea with a fishing rod in hand.

Give your catch of the day to your skipper, or have it packed up to take with you. As you return to Getxo port, cap off your angling efforts with a glass of txakoli, Basque sparkling white wine. Your tour concludes with transport back to your hotel.

Whale-Watching Excursion (full day)
After pickup from your Bilbao hotel in the morning, head north on a 20-minute drive to the port in the charming seaside town of Getxo. After boarding your boat seating a max of 10 passengers, your skipper provides a safety briefing and explains what you can expect to see during the day. (The high season for whale watching runs from May to October, but whales can be seen year round.)

For 90 minutes, take a scenic coastal route as you head out into waters about 10 miles (16 km) north of Bermeo. As you pass Sopelana and Bakio, upscale suburbs of Bilbao with spectacular beaches, surfers may be riding along the water with you.

The variety of habitats in the Bay of Biscay supports whales, dolphins and porpoises, which you may spot depending on the season and weather. Bottlenose dolphins may be frolicking in the shallow waters of harbors and estuaries. Beyond the shallow depths, minke whales and porpoises may be circling schools of fish, while flocks of gannets hover above and then bomb-dive for the same food.

In the deep open sea, keep your eyes peeled for razorback whales, long-finned pilot whales and short-beaked common dolphins cruising for prey in the nutrient-rich waters. If your skipper takes you out to the central bay, you may be lucky enough to sight sperm whales, killer whales and striped dolphins.

Finish your day at sea with a glass of delicious txakoli, slightly fizzy white wine from Basque Country. Return to Getxo port for transport back to your hotel.
