Start with a pickup from your Puerto del Carmen, Playa Blanca, Costa Teguise, Puerto Calero or Arrecife meeting points, and then sit back and soak up the rugged scenery of Lanzarote. On your way to Timanfaya National Park, travel through the pretty villages of Macher, Uga and Yaiza, where bright white houses coat the dark volcanic landscapes like icing sugar.
As you work your way through southern Lanzarote, admire sights of the mountains of Timanfaya looming on the horizon, adding to the other-worldly drama of the island’s lunar-like scenery. Formed in the 18th century after a series of volcanic eruptions, these peaks, known as the Fire Mountains, make an epic sight and still emanate fierce heat from the long-ago explosions.
On arrival in the 3-mile-square (8-km-square) national park, trace the famous Route of the Volcanoes, which twists and turns through the most spectacular areas of the reserve, and follow tight hairpin bends around the the highest volcano, Santa Catalina, on the way. Hop out of your coach to step outside and take snapshots of the geographical formations around you, from solidified lava flows and weird volcanic pipes to the stunning Mantle of the Virgin — a natural volcanic rock grotto that rears high into the sky.
On your travels, enjoy several stops to witness the intense subterranean heat of this volcanic landscape for yourself. Watch spellbound as your expert guide carries out geothermal demonstrations, such as creating small steaming geysers by pouring cold water into the ground,
and throwing bundles of branches into fire pits to see them catch light and burst into flames in seconds.
After watching the experiments, head to an outdoor grill area where a delicious meal is cooked using the natural heat that rises from underground. Tuck in to delights including seared chicken, Spanish sausage and Canarian potatoes as well as salad, and sample some of the delicious wine produced in the region — it’s the perfect accompaniment to your open-air adventure. Admire the fiery sunset as you eat, and watch the orange sun sink below the silhouetted mountains.
Finally, return to your coach for your journey back and your drop-off at the meeting point.
