After a pickup from a bus stop near your Puerto del Carmen, Playa Blanca or Costa Teguise hotel, travel around the island by air-conditioned coach to discover some of its little-known gems with a local guide. Your first stop is in the town of Nazaret for a visit to Lagomar, a cliff-top house that was designed by local artist Manrique and once owned by Lawrence of Arabia actor: Omar Sharif. Purchased on a whim at the height of the actor’s 1970’s fame, the house was never actually lived in by Omar Sharif, as its ownership was forfeited in a game of cards. Hear the stories, ogle the architecture and take a look inside the house museum with your guide.

Continue from Nazaret to the Cactus Gardens in Guatiza village, where a varied range of cacti and other island plants await. Another Manrique-designed attraction, the gardens are spread around a landscaped quarry with plants arranged in an amphitheater-style layout for easy viewing. Stroll around with your guide, and learn about the cochineal bugs, which live inside the cacti, that are used to create red food coloring.

Leave the gardens in the early afternoon, and travel to the port of
