Look at San Sebastian from a different point of view. Hop on a double-decker bus and discover the highlights of the city. King Sancho el Mayor of Navarra is said to have founded the city of San Sebastian around 1180. The city's unique geographical location with a port, made it an ideal military stronghold. To fortify itself Mount Urgull was converted into a castle armed with artillery to defend the region. This is one of the reasons why the region has seen several wars and experienced many sieges during the 15th and 16th centuries.

In 1721, San Sebastian saw a battle between the English and French. After occupying the region for three years the French were defeated and finally withdrew after the signing a peace treaty. In 1808 Napoleon's troops again occupied the walled city, which was reduced to ashes after an intense battle with anglo-portuguese troops.

The survivors, with great will power set out to rebuild the city. The city got more attention when Queen Isabel II first visited the city in 1845 and the city began to grow. With street lighting, telephones, water and other infra structural facilities being developed, the city expanded and attracted visitors from all over the world. Although the 19th century saw more Carlist wars, San Sebastian still prospered. In 1863 San Sebastian was named capital of the Gipuzkoa province. The role of the city changed, the walls were demolished, the focus was more on commerce, the city became a popular tourist destination and spa resort, the economy boomed and San Sebastian became the most cosmopolitan city in Europe.

Not very pleased with the tour. The schedule is completely off the real bus stops. The stops are not very well marked, you have to search for them. They do not announce the stops, so that you don't know it is a stop until you realize several stops after the fact. It had rained in the morning and they took off the cover on the top level and since they hit all of the trees along the tour, you were getting rained on all the time. I have ridden this bus tour in 9 other European cities and this was by far my least favorite. Other bus tours allow for 48 hr rides, which would allow for more time to visit the museums and other sites. Plus the bus only makes a stop once an hour, which limits the number of attractions you can visit in the scheduled time. The concept is good but it has a lot of rough edges that need to be polished.

I love doing these tours when I first get to a place just to get my bearings and to get a general idea of where things are and what I need to go back and see. Although a short tour compared to others I have done, it was good to be taken over the river into Gros and see one of the less touristy areas. A pity they don't have the earphones with different languages so you don't have to listen to 3 languages.

San Sebastian is a wonderful place. Friendly people and beautiful. It us only small and the tour is good but nothing like the Paris or Barcelona tours. Still interesting though

A hop on hop off with a schedule - the times are posted at the bus stops - and they are on time! San Sebastian is a bit too big to walk so this is perfect. Highly recommend

The last two tours of the day were cancelled without warning so just as well we caught the one we did. Apart from that, everything was good and the bus stop was really easy to find.
