Day 1: Bowness-on-Windermere (D)
Start your tour with a pickup from Windermere railway station or your centrally located hotel in Windermere, Bowness-on-Windermere or Ambleside.
Board your comfortable mini-coach with your driver who doubles as your guide, and travel to your hotel, the famous Lindeth Howe Country House Hotel, on the edges of Bowness. Standing in six acres of gardens with gorgeous views over Lake Windermere, this delightful 4-star hotel occupies a large Victorian house that was once owned by Beatrix Potter, who bought the property for her mother in 1915.
Check in at the hotel and then enjoy free time to do as you wish. Perhaps stroll the mile (1.6 kilometers) or so into nearby Bowness to browse its charming streets and shops, or relax in the hotel gardens amid the lake views. Tonight, enjoy dinner at the hotel’s acclaimed restaurant before retiring for the night in readiness for tomorrow.

Day 2: Bowness Lake Windermere Cruise Hill Top House Hawkshead Tarn Hows Bowness (B, D)
Relax over breakfast at the Lindeth Howe and enjoy the morning free to get acquainted with the Windermere area. Perhaps head into Bowness to sightsee or shop, hire a rowboat on Lake Windermere, or follow a lakeside trail to admire the stunning views over the mountains and fells.
At around midday, meet your driver-guide at your hotel and head out on your 4.5-hour Beatrix Potter Lakeland tour. Settle into your shared mini-coach and listen to commentary about the Lake District and its famous towns, lakes and fells as you drive to Bowness Bay, the departure point for your Lake Windermere cruise.
Step aboard a launch boat at the pier and soak up the awe-inspiring views of the surrounding peaks, bays and woodlands as you sail north to Waterhead, where Beatrix Potter spent many childhood holidays. Then, disembark at Waterhead and board your coach again to travel to Hill Top House, the 17th-century farm that Beatrix bought in 1905 following her first book, The Tale of Peter Rabbit.
Head inside (additional cost) to explore this charming farmhouse independently, roaming the rooms that have been left just as Beatrix wished, with her possessions and furniture still in place. See the writing desk where she worked and recognise some of the scenes featured in her illustrations for stories such as The Tale of Samuel Whiskers.
Leave time to explore Hill Top 'sgardens, whose cottage-style flowerbeds and vegetable patches inspired the exploits of characters such as Jemima Puddle-Duck and Mrs Tiggy-Winkle. Browse the souvenirs in the visitor shop and then continue on to the picturesque village of Hawkshead. Admire the cobbled medieval lanes and higgledy-piggledy cottages, and see the Old Grammar School, where the poet William Wordsworth was a pupil in the 1780s.
After free time for lunch (own expense) here, drive to Tarn Hows, a famous beauty spot. Drink in the views over the mountains and lakes from its slopes before returning to Bowness, where your guided tour ends with a hotel drop-off in the late afternoon. Spend the rest of the day as you wish and enjoy a delicious included dinner at the hotel restaurant this evening.

The accommodation and tour were fantastic! The only disappointment was that the time given to begin the tour was 9:30 and it didn't really start until 11:40 from the hotel. The hotel staff were fantastic ringing to get information etc and luckily I had a book and a lovely place to read it while I waited.

My recent trip to the Lake District was much more than I had expected. Beautiful weather, first class hotel at Lindeth Howe, gourmet restaurant. It was what I needed after attending a congress in London. For young families I would recommend a week stay so they can enjoy sailing, horseback riding, hiking. It was also very interesting to learn about Beatrix Potter's exemplary contribution to the district.
