Take a day out from York into the stunning scenery of the North York Moors National Park with the option of travelling part of the journey (from Grosmont to Pickering) by train on the North Yorkshire Moors Railway with 15% discount from normal fares (paid locally).
9am: The tour departs from opposite the Dean Court Hotel in Duncombe Place, York, YO1 7EF (near York Minster) and heads off into the Vale of York, then through the Howardian Hills past Castle Howard en route to the Market Town of Kirkbymoorside.
You will arrive in Kirkbymoorside on Market Day so you will be able to browse the stalls and local produce of a traditional English Market or, if you prefer, you can just enjoy a proper Yorkshire Brew in one of the Cafes - the choice is yours!
You will then head onto the North York Moors, taking advantage of Gillamoor's "Surprise View" and driving through the Rosedale Valley with a stop at the iconic Ralph's Cross at Blakey Rigg, which provides uninterrupted views of the stunning scenery.
The next stop is at Danby Beacon where you will learn about the role it played in intercepting and shooting down the first enemy aircraft to fall on English soil in World War 2 before arriving in the beautiful village of Lealholm (described in The Sunday Times as "the prettiest village in Yorkshire) where you can try a traditional Pub Lunch, visit a Tea Room or just admire the views with a picnic alongside the River Esk - the choice is yours!
You leave Lealholm after lunch then stop to photograph and hear the romantic tale of Beggar's Bridge before enjoying the spectacular views on the drive up Limber Hill towards Grosmont.
On arrival at Grosmont, home to the North Yorkshire Moors Railway Engine Sheds, you have two choices! If you want to travel on the NYMR, you buy your discounted ticket and catch the steam train to the end of the line at Pickering then rejoin the Minicoach later - please note that we cannot absolutely guarantee that it will be a steam train as we are in the hands of NYMR for this! If you choose the alternative of staying with the Minicoach, you will have time to explore the Steam Sheds and the village of Grosmont itself or just relax in a local Tea Room before leaving.
The Minicoach passengers leave Grosmont and head south for Pickering, learning the history behind the mysterious RAF Fylingdales Pyramid on Snod Hill as they pass, then stop off in Pickering to pick up the NYMR travellers and may even see them arrive by Steam Train if the timing is right!
You will then return to York, arriving back at the meeting point at around 5.00pm, but you should not book onward travel arrangements too close to the arrival back in York, just in case of traffic problems.
