You’ll be picked at your hotel for the scenic drive around Lake Ontario to Fort George, the scene of some significant battles during the War of 1812 and the headquarters for the Centre Division of the British Army at the time. Once there, you’re largely on your own to do what you want, making this tour perfect for the independent traveler. The fort today consists of thick walls, block houses, living quarters, and a powder magazine, the only remaining original building. Stand on the imposing ramparts and gaze across the Niagara River to Fort Niagara on the US side of the border.

Afterward, visit the town of Niagara-on-the-Lake, home to 15,000 people. In the 18th century, it was a haven for American-based British loyalists, who fled here during the American Revolution.
