Looking for a mix of exercise and relaxation as you explore Yukon’s great outdoors? This full-day canoe excursion on the Yukon River is suitable for all skill levels, making it a great outing for couples or families. Choose from the two options below to make the most of your guided day along a stretch of one North America’s longest rivers.
No matter what option you decide, expect helpful tips from your experienced guide along the way, and a stop to enjoy freshly prepared lunch or dinner (meal depends on your selected departure time).
Voyageur Canoe Trip (3 9 people) Depart from Whitehorse with your small group for a day out in the Voyageur. Stretching 28 feet long (8.5 meters), this canoe is ideal for families and friends who want to take turns putting their paddles down to admire the surrounding scenery. This is also an opportunity for kids to learn the ropes without being expected to row the entire time.
After a safety and gear orientation, put on your safety vest and launch your canoe into the water. Travel northwest, allowing a gentle, steady stream to carry you past sandy cliffs and the boreal forest. Midway, stop for a lunch or dinner consisting of homemade sandwiches, fresh produce, dips and beverages.
Once you're finished with your meal, enter Miles Canyon, a deeper part of the Yukon River that requires your full attention and participation. Your guide leads you between the narrow walls of the canyon before arriving at Schwatka Lake. Here, you can enjoy views of Grey Mountain before you row to shore and hop in your provided transport back to Whitehorse. Tandem Canoe Trip (2 people) Depart from Whitehorse for a full-day out in a tandem canoe. Duos looking for more of a workout might choose this option that requires more constant paddling.
Start the day with a safety and gear orientation. If you purchase a fishing license in advance, you can even rent gear to fish for northern pike and grayling along the way. Once you're outfitted, launch your two-person canoe into the water and set off for a trip that takes you past sandy cliffs and greenery.
Midway, stop for a lunch or dinner consisting of homemade sandwiches, fresh produce, dips and beverages. If you like, cast your line in the water to see if you get a bite from a lingering grayling or northern pike.
After your meal, enter Miles Canyon, a deeper part of the Yukon River that requires your full attention and participation. Your guide leads you between the narrow walls of the canyon, which spills out on Schwatka Lake. Here, you can enjoy views of Grey Mountain before you paddle to shore to meet your provided transport back to Whitehorse.
