Day 1: Whitehorse or Skagway to Dyea trailhead (L, D)
From Whitehorse, have an early breakfast and be ready for your guide to pick you up in the early morning. Extra luggage can be stored at a secure facility in Whitehorse. You’ll drive from Whitehorse along the Klondike Highway with a brief stop in the town of Carcross. Continue past Tagish and Tutshi Lakes before arriving at Fraser Meadows train station where the group from Skagway will arrive by rail.
If you are departing from Skagway, you’ll be provided with a train ticket to Fraser Meadows, BC, Canada where you’ll meet your group.
After the group gathers in Fraser Meadows, the minicoach will take you to the summit where you’ll cross into Alaska. Have your passport handy for the border crossing!
Once you have entered Alaska, the van will descend about 3,000 feet (914 m) to Skagway, part of Alaska’s famous Inside Passage. After a short trip into Skagway to pick up trail permits, the van will take you to the trailhead in Dyea just 15 minutes away.
Lace up your hiking boots and hit the Chilkoot Trail! You’ll hike a short day of 4.8 miles (7.7 km) to arrive at Finnegan’s Point where you’ll camp for the night. On the way, you’ll see the remnants of a sawmill that was active in the 1950s. Once you arrive at your camp for the night, take in the spectacular beauty of the valley and Irene Glacier, which towers over the point.
Overnight: Finnegan’s Point
Day 2: Finnegan’s Point to Sheep Camp (B, L, D)
Today you’ll hike 7 miles (11 km), gaining 750 feet (225 m) as you hike up a valley surrounded by mountains with hanging glaciers. You’ll rest at Canyon City, once the southern terminus of an aerial tramway built to haul gold rush equipment up and over Chilkoot Pass.
You’ll cross bridges over creeks and rivers as you climb through gorgeous terrain to Sheep Camp. After setting up camp for the night and enjoying a hot dinner, you’ll listen to a friendly park ranger’s briefing on trail conditions and safety, and the area’s history, ecology, and wildlife.
Overnight: Sheep Camp
Day 3: Sheep Camp to Happy Camp (B, L, D)
You’ll get an early start for a big day, which will cover approximately 8.7 miles(14 km) with a climb of 2,750 feet (840 m). The terrain changes rapidly as you walk from Pacific Northwest Coastal Forest, then out of the tree-line and into the alpine tundra. Depending on the time of year and the conditions, you may be walking on snow pack near the summit.
The Scales and The Golden Staircase — two steep sections of boulder-strewn terrain leading up to the summit — as well as the US-Canadian border will be highlights today.
From the summit, you can see the lush coastal forest of Alaska behind you and the alpine tundra of Canada ahead. Enjoy your climbing achievement and imagine the plight of the gold prospectors who packed one ton of gear up and over this route, making the trek multiple times to haul everything.
From the summit you will continue another five miles to Happy Camp, where you’ll spend the night. As you relax after a long day, you’ll appreciate the name of this site!
Overnight: Happy Camp
Day 4: Happy Camp to Bare Loon Lake (B, L, D)
Relax and enjoy an easier hike through alpine tundra into sub-alpine boreal forest. Admire spectacular views as you trek along the ridge near Long Lake and drop down to Deep Lake. Here you can rest and dip your feet in the crystal clear water while having a snack. Or if you’re brave, take a quick dip in the cold mountain lake!
By mid-afternoon, you'll arrive at Lindeman City. Check out displays about the trail's colorful history at a viewing tent maintained by Parks Canada. You can also pick up your official Chilkoot Trail hiking certificate. Then push on for Bare Loon Lake, for a day's hike of 8.5 miles (13.7 km) in total with an overall descent of 740 feet (225 m).
Overnight: Bare Loon Lake
Day 5: Bare Loon Lake to Skagway or Whitehorse (B, L)
On your last day of hiking, you’ll glimpse Bennett Lake as you hike out to Bennett. Bennett was the gathering place for more than 20,000 stampeders as they built wooden boats to sail to the gold fields hundreds of miles away. The town had streets, hotels, stores, warehouses, and offices, but the only building that remains is St Andrews Presbyterian Church.
When you arrive at Bennett in the late morning after hiking 4 miles (6.4 km), you'll tuck into a hot meal at the Bennett Lake train station dining room. Afterward, have a couple of hours to explore this historic site at your leisure.
In the early afternoon, you’ll board the White Pass & Yukon Route Railway, traveling along the eastern shore of Bennett Lake, to the town of Carcross. In Carcross, you might like to munch on a well-deserved ice cream cone from the Matthew Watson General Store. The building that became the store was towed from Bennett across the frozen lake to Carcross in 1911!
From Carcross, you’ll continue by train on the White Pass & Yukon Route Railway to Skagway, crossing through White Pass and dropping almost 3,000 feet (915m) from the highest point, down through the Pacific Northwest rainforest to the coast. Enjoy the fully-narrated rail excursion, arriving in Skagway, Alaska in the early evening. If you are staying in Skagway, you'll say farewell to the group here.
If you are returning to Whitehorse, your driver will store your gear in the minicoach while you take about two hours to explore Skagway and eat dinner (own expense). After dinner, you’ll board the minicoach and head three hours north to Whitehorse, where you will be dropped off at your hotel in the late evening to end your journey along the Chilkoot Trail.
