Day 1: Windhoek/Swakopmund — Etosha National Park (D)
Start your day early with a hotel pickup from Windhoek or Swakopmund and depart north to Outjo, the main gateway
city into Etosha National Park (about a 4-hour drive from Windhoek and
6-hour drive from Swakopmund). Here, freshen up, meet fellow travelers
and have lunch (own expense).
Travel to the heart of Etosha
National Park, and then set your first sights on Africa’s legendary
wildlife during an afternoon tour in a closed, air-conditioned touring
vehicle — open-air vehicles are available at an additional cost. Observe
zebras, giraffes and springbok grazing on the savannas, and maybe see
an elephant giving itself a dust bath with its trunk, a curious zebra
crossing the road to check out your vehicle or a lion lounging under a
tree, warding off flies with its swishing tail.
Just before
sunset, drive to a safari camp — and your base for the next two nights —
located outside the southern part of the park. Here, enjoy a delicious dinner and tuck in
for the night.
Overnight: Etosha Safari Camp outside the park’s southern Andersson Gate, or similar 3-star lodging
Day 2: Etosha National Park (B, D)
After enjoying breakfast at your camp, make your way across the savannas and dry woodlands to the Etosha pan, a cracked, white salt-crater, spanning 1,930 square miles (5,000 sq km). During seasons of good rain, this salt pan is the gathering point for hundreds of pelicans, flamingos and other water birds, as well as springbok, wildebeest, zebras, lions, rhinos and elephants. Not to worry, if you visit during the dry season — as part of the park’s conservation efforts, artificial waterholes have been developed along the salt pan, so incredible wildlife viewing abounds during all seasons.
Spend a full day in the park exploring the waterholes along the enormous Etosha pan and marveling at the animals that gather around the waterholes. If you’re lucky, you may catch a glimpse of the endangered black rhino as well.
Stop for lunch (own expense) under the shade at one of the park’s rest camps and then continue your exploration. Leave the park shortly before sunset and head back to the safari camp for dinner.
Overnight: Etosha Safari Camp outside the park’s southern Andersson Gate, or similar 3-star lodging
Day 3: Etosha National Park (B, D)
Pack your bags and savor your final breakfast at your safari camp, and then head out across the savannas to spot wildlife that you may have missed the day before. While you’re on the lookout, listen to your guide talk about the complexity involved in managing the animal reserve and the various conservation efforts of the area’s endangered species, including the black rhino and the black-faced impala.
Enjoy lunch (own expense) at a rest camp and then spend the rest of the day touring the reserve with your guide. After leaving the park just before sunset, settle into your lodge accommodation by the park's eastern gate, and then dig into a hearty dinner. As you lie in for the night, listen for the roar of the lion or the haunting call-and-response cry of the jackal.
Overnight: Mokuti Etosha Lodge outside the park’s eastern Von Lindequist Gate, or similar 3-star lodging
Day 4: Etosha National Park — Windhoek (B)
After breakfast, set
out early from your lodge and travel south to the city of Otjiwarongo
for lunch (own expense), before continuing on to Okahandja. Known as the
‘Garden Town of Namibia,’ Okahandja translates as 'the
place where two rivers flow into each other to form one wide one,’ the
two rivers being the Okavango River and Okamita River, which flow only during
the summer.
In Okahandja, visit a craft market,
where woodcarvers from the north sell their creations, and perhaps pick up
unique souvenirs to take home. Your tours concludes in the early evening when you arrive back at your hotel in Windhoek or Swakopmund.
