Alesund is spread across three separate islands and has a beautiful landscape as you look across the ocean. Alesund is known for its love of medieval ornaments, spires and unique Jugendstyle architecture with turrets on most buildings. Modern Alesund is recognized as Norway’s largest fishing port and resembles a kind of ‘Norwegian Venice’ as it is completely surrounded by water with unique bridges over canals everywhere you turn.
It is possible to see Aksla Mountain from a special viewpoint in Alesund where there is an amazing view and a little restaurant too. You will see the town in action surrounded by the beautiful, calm canals.
Another unique feature of Alesund is its narrow steep streets which gives the town a certain ‘look’ and identity about it, particularly with its Jugendstyle architecture. City life is hidden with these tiny little streets, but it is certainly where you will find lots of shops and the day-to-day life of residents in Alesund.
When in the town of Alesund, you cannot miss seeing the small lighthouse which controls the ships during bad weather and night times. This small lighthouse is unusually placed in a town but it is essential due to the increasing number of ships docking in Alesund.
