Day 1
Arrival in Romania. Transfer airport-hotel. Overnight in Bucharest.
Day 2
On our way to the land of Bucovina we will pass through the regions formerly known as Walachia and Moldavia. You will be able to observe the difference between these areas and also the distinction between the lowland villages and the ones in the highland or in the mountains.
Day 3
Part of the main attractions in this area are the monasteries. We will start with a visit at Sucevita, an Eastern Orthodox convent which is part of the UNESCO Patrimony. Next you will have a unique experience at a workshop in Marginea where you will learn the basics of moulding clay from the local craftsmen. Next on our list of monasteries is Putna, a place of pilgrimage that was built in the 15th century. It has many architectural and decorative features and the church was unusually large for its time, the explanation being that it was built to be the burial place for Prince Stephen, an iconic medieval leader.
Day 4
You will go on an excursion to the villages in the area and hike through its primeval forests. The locals are very friendly and eager to talk and share their knowledge and stories.
Day 5
You will enjoy the picturesque view from a ride with an old steam train called the mocanita. On our way back we will visit another monastery part of the UNESCO world heritage sites called Moldovita. This regions is well known for the art of painting and decorating Easter eggs and you will be delighted to learn more about this craft from the locals.
Day 6
This morning we will start our day with a visit to the Neamt fortress which dominates from 500 meters above. In the same region we will visit the Neamt monastery one of the oldest Romanian Orthodox churches in the country with its beautiful Gothic style windows and friezes colored in green, yellow and brown.
Day 7
Today we will visit the jewel called Voronet, one of the most beautiful painted monastery which has a unique blue color on the outdoor frescoes that made it famous in the entire world. Our journey continues with Suceava, the former political capital of this region. The ruins of the fortress with the same name are next on our list. Also we will pay a visit to the Ethnographic Museum, an open-air exhibit where you will be able to observe the Romanian traditional houses.
Day 8
End of Bucovina and Painted Monasteries Tour.
