The Red Square is known as the "signature" of Russia and has been in the very centre of Russian history since the 15th century. It has witnessed such events as Ivan the Terrible’s confession of his misdeeds to the people in 1550, great demonstrations of the Soviet Union Era, executions and the great parades. In Russia the Red Square is called "Krasnaya Ploshad" which originally meant beautiful square.
At the southern end of the Red Square there is St Basil’s cathedral with its onion-like domes, looking almost like something from a fairy-tale. It was commissioned in 1552 by Ivan the Terrible to celebrate his conquering of Kazan. According to the legend, the architect was later blinded so that he could never create another building of similar beauty and traditional Russian design. It is built from brick and comprises many colourful asymmetrical domes over nine chapels. The interior is decorated with 16th and 17th century icons, frescoes and ceiling paintings.
Your professional private guide will accompany you during the tour will tell you many interesting and little-known facts about the cathedral.
