Day 1: St Petersburg
After your cruise ship docks in St Petersburg port, meet your guide and hop aboard a comfortable coach to begin your first day of sightseeing. See University Embankment, Palace Square and Nevsky Prospect, the city’s most famous street. Flanked by plus-sized palace, a half a dozen 18th-century churches, centuries-old shopping malls and shops selling just about everything, the street is a must-see for any visitor to the city.
After cruising through the city and passing sights like Church of the Savior on Spilled Blood and St Isaac’s Cathedral, stop by Peter and Paul Fortress, highlighted by Peter and Paul Cathedral with its 400-foot (122-meter) spire. Let your guide lead you through the fortress and cathedral telling stories about its history and seeing where various emperors are interned.
Day 2: St Petersburg
Your second day begins with an exciting ride in a hydrofoil boat, the fastest way to get to Peterhof Palace. On arrival, begin with a tour of this Versailles-like fortress, and hear about its history from your guide. Explore the lavish rooms and gawk at the audacious design of the palace, with its mirrors, sculptures, chandeliers and paintings.
After a tour of the interior, stroll around Peterhof Park, the vast gardens that surround the complex. The Upper Garden, located between the St Petersburg highway and the Grand Palace, is a Gallic-style garden with five fountains including one depicting Neptune. The Lower Park lies between the Grand Palace and the seashore, boasting the world's largest system of fountains. As you wander, snap photos and hear from your guide how the park's 18th-century fountain system doesn't require the use of any pumps to operate.
When the time comes, return to St Petersburg port, where your shore excursion concludes.
