Day 1: St Petersburg
Meet your private guide at St Petersburg port and hop into your air-conditioned minivan to begin your excursion.
Travel first to the beautifully preserved Kolomna district and discover top attractions such as the Grand Choral Synagogue — the second largest synagogue in Europe. Chat with the Rabbi or the locals you meet and admire a number of important memorial plaques in the area.
Continue on to the ESOD (the Jewish Community Centre), a vibrant hub of Jewish community life where organizations such as the Hesed Avraam Charity Center, the Adain Lo Family Center and the Hillel Student Center run their social, educational and welfare programs. During your visit, perhaps chat to some of the people you meet and gain insight into the courses and events they run.
After lunch at one of the city’s kosher or vegetarian restaurants (own expense), follow your guide to the Russian Museum of Ethnography. The museum shines a light on Eastern European Jewish culture with carefully curated displays of ceramics, traditional clothing, jewelry, religious artifacts and items used during Jewish ceremonies. During your visit, gain insight into the lives of Jewish people in Russia and their various traditions.
After six hours exploring St Petersburg’s Jewish culture and heritage, return to the port in your private minivan to conclude the first day of your tour.
Day 2: St Petersburg
Rejoin your private guide at the port in St Petersburg in the morning and travel into the city by air-conditioned minivan to begin the final day of your excursion.
Visit the Peter and Paul Fortress, the city’s imposing 18th-century citadel. Listen as your guide details its turbulent past and learn the role it played during the Russian Revolution in 1917. Explore, too, the Peter and Paul Cathedral, a Russian Orthodox cathedral with the tallest Orthodox bell tower in the world.
Continue to the Church of the Savior on Spilled Blood. Built on the spot where Emperor Alexander II was assassinated in 1881, the church is today considered among St Petersburg’s most impressive attractions. Admire its beautiful baroque and neoclassical exterior, then head inside to marvel at the many treasures held there.
After a break for lunch (own expense), visit the spectacular Hermitage Museum, which is home to the one of largest collections of paintings in the world. Head inside the Winter Palace, part of the museum's complex, and explore the lavish state rooms and chambers with your guide. Constructed in the 18th century to mirror the might and majesty of imperial Russia, the palace was the official residence of Russian emperors for nearly 200 years.
Time permitting, you'll also take in iconic attractions like Palace Square, St Isaac’s Cathedral and the spit of Vasilyevsky Island. Enjoy 30 minutes’ free time for souvenir shopping at your leisure, then, after a full day in the city, return to the port where your 2-day shore excursion will come to an end.
