When you arrive in Mae Sot, your local guide meets your bus to welcome you. You have a couple of hours to nap or freshen up at a nearby guesthouse (basic shared accommodation), and then take a short ride to a market on the Thailand-Myanmar border next to the Moi River. Have lunch at the market and enjoy the opportunity to try some authentic Thai-Burmese dishes before hopping in a songthaew (truck taxi) for the drive to Umphang. The journey takes about four hours and includes numerous twists and turns on a road that winds through the dense green foliage of the mountains (anti-motion-sickness pills can come in handy!). Your accommodation tonight consists of basic huts.

After breakfast, your guide provides a safety briefing and instruction for your rafting excursion on the Mae Klong River. Pass by tall limestone cliffs, dense jungle and bamboo trees as you glide downriver; after a few hours, disembark to start trekking along a trail that leads through the jungle. Your guide shares informative commentary on the plant and animal life around you as you hike.

After about four hours of trekking, arrive at your campsite, located in Umphang Wildlife Sanctuary. Your guide pitches tents and cooks dinner, and you spend the evening relaxing under the stars.

In the morning, take a short hike to towering Thi Loi Su waterfall, the largest waterfall in Southeast Asia, measuring up to 1,640 feet (500 meters) high. Bring a towel and swimming gear for a dip in the pools formed by the waterfall, and then continue walking through bamboo forests and until you reach the village of Ko Tha, a Karen ethnic hill tribe settlement. Spend the night in a traditional Karen home with a local host family. Your guide explains Karen traditions and history, and helps translate so that you can talk with the villagers that you meet.

Overnight: Homestay in Ko Tha

Day 5: Ko Tha Mae Sot (B, L, D)
Wake up to a scrumptious jungle breakfast. Then say farewell to your village hosts and tackle the final section of your trek: about three hours of walking along the river to the town of Palatha. From there, take a songthaew back to Umphang where you have the option to shower before returning to Mae Sot. The bus from Mae Sot to Bangkok leaves at 8pm. Your guide will not join the overnight bus.
