What you can expect:
This experience was created to showcase the culinary pride of Japan and the Suzuhiro`s commitment to quality, tradition, and community. This tour and English speaking guide allow you to get up close and personal with the culinary techniques, production, and stories behind the popular traditional Japanese food, Kamaboko. Kamaboko is a local traditional fish-based product with a history going back to the 12th century. The spring water of the Hakone mountains and Odawara`s proximity to the Pacific Ocean made this an ideal area for the production of Kamaboko.
At first, you will get an English guided tour at Kamaboko museum. After learning about some of the basics, it will be time to see craftspeople handcrafting Kamaboko closely.
(Note: On Wednesdays and Sundays, the factory is closed so you cannot see craftsmen making Kamaboko. There will be a screen to show how to make instead)
There will be a tasting in a renovated 200-year-old traditional Japanese building with views of the Japanese garden. Suzuhiro also established the local craft brewery to create a beer to complement the subtle flavors of Japanese foods. Your Kamaboko tasting can be paired with
local craft beer and local sake. The Kamaboko tasting will include various types of prepared and styled Kamaboko and traditional Japanese foods. There will three distinct tasting plates in western influenced style and traditional Japanese style. The western influenced Kamaboko prepared with seasonal vegetables and sauces served in a tapas style with local craft beer. Along with the traditional Kamaboko plate, which will include Kamaboko and traditional Japanese foods like Wasabizuke and Shiokara, items reflecting the seasons and culture of Japan will be served with local sake. The tasting will be enjoyed with three types of the popular craft brew, Hakone Beer, produced on site and three types of local sake. Your food and drinks will be accompanied by a menu explaining the drinks and dishes for a truly insightful and wonderful experience.
