Stop At: The Kremlin, Nizhny Novgorod, Nizhny Novgorod Oblast, Volga District
Meet your guide in the city center - at the Chkalov monument and start your tour of the city's central highlights and Kremlin. Nizhny Novgorod is one of Russia’s major cities. The dominating feature of the city skyline is the grand Kremlin (1500-1511), with its red-brick towers. After Bolshevik devastation, the only ancient building left within the Kremlin walls is the tent-like Archangel Cathedral (1624-31), first built in stone in the 13th century. The city has a truly fascinating history that you will learn more about during your tour. The city was founded in the 13th century and became one of the Russian Empire’s most important outposts by the 16th century. In the 19th century it became the capital of trade for the whole of Russia due to its perfect location on the Volga. By the early 20th century it had also become an industrial hub. Between 1932 and 1990 the city was known as ‘Gorky’ after the famous Russian writer who was born there. During the Soviet era the city was actually closed to most foreigners in order to protect the production and military facilities in the city. Nowadays it’s a true mix of the cultural and historical monuments, yet with a contemporary vibe. There is a lot of history to tell, and it`s probably the best place to make photos on all sides and see a good part of downtown Nizhny. Inside you may optionally visit the Russian art museum and Arsenal modern art center that holds all sorts of temporary exhibitions, the museums, the towers and wall tickets are each 300-400 RUR per pax, otherwise it`s a great outdoor experience on a good day. During the tour you will see: " Kremlin " Chkalov staircase " Minin and Pozharsky Square " Archangel Michael Cathedral " Arsenal " Governor`s house " Eternal Flame monument WW2 " WW2machinery " Kozma Minin tombstone " Column monument to national heroes.
Meeting point: Chkalov monument. On arrival: You can get any public transport means to get to the Kremlin, the riverside extremity of the Minin square where you arrive is topped with a statue to a famous Soviet aviator, Valery Chkalov, this is supposed to be the meeting place (mind you have an umbrella on a rainy day). Entry tickets to museums, wall/towers are between 1-5 USD, best public toilets are inside the Arsenal building, Kremlin walk may be a bit tiring for small kids and seniors, coffee break can be done inside one of its towers, Pantry Tower. For fans of Russian art, Art Museum is usually open from 11 to 6 p.m. , 12 to 8 pm. on Thrursday and closed on Tuesday, they have a good collection of icons and paintings, worth seeing, that`s a good continuation of the Kremlin tour.
This tour/activity will have a maximum of 15 travelers
